Death of a Kitchen Boy

By Thursday, everything was back to normal at Lea Green, although I got the impression that it wasn’t just me who was trying to keep out of Mr Bull’s way until the disastrous cookery demo had faded from his memory. Some of the teachers appeared to be doing the same, particularly Miss Leski.

It was raining at break-time, so instead of going into the yard, we met up with Jimmy and went off to the library to discuss what we’d found out from Sir John. We told him about how Furze had been given a glowing reference by an Arab prince, how Lady Coverly hadn’t liked the atmosphere at the Priory, and how Parsons had a conviction for theft.

Jimmy, who wasn’t looking his usual cheerful self, thanked us for our efforts, but we could tell his mind was somewhere else.

“What’s up, Jimmy?” Donna asked. “Have more strange things been happening at the Priory?”

Jimmy shook his head. “No, but things are a bit difficult at home at the moment. Mum’s upset because her ring’s still missing, so whenever Dad goes out, she starts turning the place upside down trying to find it. Dad still suspects me of causing all the supernatural stuff, and I think something’s worrying him too, because he’s in a permanently bad mood. And Liddy’s even grumpier than usual, because Furze still hasn’t apologised for calling her a liar.”

Donna tried to cheer him up. “Never mind, you’ve got the party to look forward to. Tell you what, why don’t you ask your mum and dad if we can come to the barbecue, so you have some friends to keep you company. We could help you look for the ring, and do some more ghost-hunting too. If we can prove it’s one of the staff faking all the supernatural stuff, you’ll be in the clear.”

“Thanks, Donna,” Jimmy said, starting to look a bit happier.

As we followed him down the passage to our classroom, I whispered to Donna. “Exactly how are we going to achieve all this? I bet you haven’t a clue.”

I was right. She hadn’t.
